There was heartache for Royston's Emma Reid as she saw her quest for Olympic gold end early.
The Melbourn Judo Club star was up early, second match on in the women's 78kg category, and she was faced with Yoon Hyun-Ji of South Korea, who was fifth at Tokyo 2020.
The pair have clashed many times before on the circuit, with wins for each, and this one was as close as expected, going to a golden score where the first to get a point being victorious.
But in her first Olympics, the world championship bronze medalist picked up a third and final penalty and just like that her Olympics was over.
Speaking to BBC Sport, a very reflective Reid said: "I'm just annoyed. I knew I had to keep on the attack to stop it happening, it happened last time, but I caught her on the ground.
"I was trying to find ways [to beat her] on the ground and I was really trying to find my grip but she is good, she was getting there before me.
"It's really hard when you are out there to change the plan and it was such a frustrating way to lose because I can give a lot more."
She was annoyed at herself for leaving it up the decision of the judges, although she only had one small grumble.
Reid said: "I had a good game plan but I maybe didn't execute it as best as I could. I was trying to get my grip and move her but she is so quick.
"I was ready and up for it but I'm just disappointed it didn't go my way.
"I think two of the shidos [penalties] were fair, she was out-attacking me, but the other one I thought I moved her, I was trying to throw her and I don't think I deserved that one.
"But you can't leave it down to the shido game so it is my fault."
Her departure signalled the end of Team GB's participation in Paris, and with just one match won among the five-strong squad.
Reid put the travails simply down to the nature of the sport.
She said: "We had really good preparation, we went away for a camp, but it was tough, especially when a few of us weren't seeded because it is our first Games. You can get anyone in the first round.
"But I've beaten her before so it is frustrating, I could have got to the next round.
"We all felt good going into it, sometimes it just doesn't happen on the day.
"I'll just reflect now on the competition and rest and decompress, it has been a tough three years.
"I'm just proud of myself for getting to this point."
