Hertfordshire drivers face long-term disruption as major motorway works could last almost a year.
National Highways has advised motorist to allow more time for their journeys as it is set to install 15 new emergency areas to the M25 between junctions 23 at South Mimms and 27 near Hobbs Cross in Essex.
It is part of a wider project to add 52 of the emergency bays to several motorways in the south east.
The works are expected to start on Thursday, April 25, and the highways body expects that all sections will be open by the end of March 2025.
A National Highways spokesperson said they were unable to confirm how long the works would last or what delays are expected.
During the construction works, the left-hand lane will be closed while lanes two, three and four will remain open with a 50mph speed limit in place.
The 100-metre long bays allow drivers a safe space to stop in an emergency if they are unable to leave the motorway or find a service station.
They have a bright orange surface to help them stand out and are equipped with emergency telephones.
