Royston has a new Safer Neighbourhood Team sergeant, with Sgt Ryan Champion taking over the role from long-serving Sgt Jon Vine.

The Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) is based at the police station on Melbourn Street, and focuses on solving long and short-term neighbourhood issues - including antisocial behaviour, criminal damage and drug-related crime.

Sgt Champion joined the constabulary in 2008, starting as a PCSO before becoming a PC and later being promoted to sergeant.

During his career, he has worked in Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Stevenage and Borehamwood.

Having grown up in North Herts, Sgt Champion returned to the area as a sergeant on the Intervention Team, who respond to 999 calls, before joining the Royston SNT.

He said: "Taking over from Jon, I am looking to continue the amazing work he has been doing in Royston and maintain the links with the community and local businesses.

"I’m looking to develop further proactive patrols including plain-clothed operations targeting business crime, residential burglaries and anti-social behaviour.

"I also aim to tackle speeding, especially in our villages, and grow the online Owl community."

After more than a quarter of a century working in various policing roles in Royston, Sgt Vine has started a new position on the Rapid Video Response Team, based at the police headquarters in Welwyn Garden City.

Sgt Vine said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my time serving the communities of North Herts over the last 26 years.

"I have been fortunate to have been posted to all the stations in the area during that time and have fond memories from each.

"I recall my first arrest as if it was yesterday, it was a lad stealing coins from a phone box in Baldock, I think that arrest shows how things have changed for us all in 26 years.

"I will always recall the happiness of when Robbie Williams came to Knebworth Park, I was the local officer at that time and it was incredible to be part of that huge event.

"I have met some wonderful people in North Herts during my service and I will always be grateful for their support and kindness."
