South Cambs MP Anthony Browne is supporting proposed measures which aim to tackle water pollution and hold water companies to account.

The measures - by regulation body Ofwat - would link dividend payments made by water companies to environment performance standards, in order to improve protections for customers and the regulated company.

Mr Browne commented: "Water companies should not be paying a single penny in dividends until they have tackled pollution, cut leakage, and secured a steady supply of clean and plentiful water.

"This includes making sure the system is more resilient to impacts from drought, which we all experienced in the summer.

"The proposal is crucial to ensure better accountability on performance and drive the outcomes that we all expect from our water company.

"I will be following this closely and looking for further opportunities in the upcoming weeks to raise this issue in Parliament and with the water company directly, to protect the important chalk streams that form such a central part of our community."

Previously Mr Browne campaigned against South Cambs District Council's plans to build 57,000 new houses and flats - on the basis that the proposals did not consider the impact on water supplies in the area.
