The new MP for South Cambridgeshire is calling for funding of Addenbrooke's new Cancer Research Hospital to be protected.

In a statement to the House of Commons, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said that a number of infrastructure projects are at risk of being cut to balance books, and announced a review into the funding of plans to deliver 40 new hospitals.

New Liberal Democrat MP Pippa Heylings says the plans should not include the new Cancer Research Hospital, which her constituents are relying on as the population grows.

Ms Heylings said: "The Conservatives have left the new government with a massive job to do to get on top of the state of our public finances.

"The Cambridge Cancer Hospital had the second stage of its business case, its Outline Business Case (OBC), approved by NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care and HM Treasury in August 2023, detailing the benefits the hospital will offer to patients across the East of England.

"A full planning application has also been submitted to the local planning authority.

"My constituents have been crying out for this new hospital and this vital project must go ahead.

"That is why I look forward to taking up the Chancellor’s offer of a meeting with the Health Secretary where I can relay the concerns of the people of South Cambridgeshire directly and to call on the government to protect funding for the hospital."

Ms Heylings added that she is "delighted" the other new hospital in the area - the Cambridge Children's Hospital - is not under review, but that she is seeking "cast iron guarantees" that its funding remains secure.

She said: "My constituents cannot wait any longer for desperately needed investment in our local health services."

A spokesperson for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "We are continuing to make significant progress on the programme for Cambridge Cancer Research Hospital.

"A programme of pre-constructions works are set to begin this autumn, including the installation of hoardings around the site, ground clearance and archaeological digs.

"Our current schedule means the hospital is on track to open its doors by 2030."
